Uju Joy Okaa acquired a bachelor’s in Pharmacy, at NAU, Awka, Nigeria. Driven by her interest in reducing the burden of fungal infections in Nigeria, Joy obtained a Masters in Research (MRes) in Medical Mycology and Fungal Immunology at the University of Aberdeen Fungal Group (AFG), funded by the Wellcome Trust. Joy completed her PhD investigating “the molecular basis of invasive growth during Aspergillus mould infection of the lung” under the supervision of Drs. Elaine Bignell, University of Manchester, and Julian Naglik, King’s College London, also with Wellcome Trust funding. Unwavering in her determination to contribute to the prevention and cure of fungal diseases, Joy is currently training at the University of Wisconsin-madison as an NIH supported postdoctoral researcher, under the mentorship of Professor Bruce Klein. Her current research if focused on discovering protective T cell antigens and epitopes and immune mechanisms of vaccine formulations for fungal and viral infections.
