Dr. Nkiru Nwamaka Ezeama (MBBS, MPH, Ph.D, FWACP) is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Nutrition and the current Head of the Department of Community Medicine and Primary Health Care, Faculty of Medicine, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. In addition to her teaching and research activities, Dr. Ezeama also served as the Post-graduate programme Coordinator and Examinations Officer for her department from October 2019 to January 2022. She also works at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Nnewi where she serves as an Honorary Consultant Public Health Physician in the Department of Community Medicine and the Director of the Centre for Community Medicine and Primary Health Care, Comprehensive Health Centre, NAUTH out-station, Neni, Anaocha local government area, Anambra State.
Before devoting her work to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Dr. Nkiru Ezeama served as the Anambra State Study Coordinator for the Nigeria PrEP Demonstration Project of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), a national study on pre-exposure prophylaxis against HIV among sero-discordant couples, sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Dr. Nkiru Ezeama's educational background includes a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka; a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom; a Fellowship in Community Health from the West African College of Physicians; a Certificate in Clinical Decision-making for Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis from the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium and a Ph.D in Public Health, specializing in nutritional epidemiology from Central University of Nicaragua/Texila American University. During her residency/specialist training in Community Medicine and Public Health, Dr. Nkiru Ezeama was awarded the A.B.O.O. Oyediran Prize for the best candidate in the 2009 Part 1 membership examination of the Faculty of Community Health, West African College of Physicians.
Dr. Nkiru Ezeama is passionate about teaching and research. With over 20 years experience in the fields of Medicine and Public Health, she has several publications in both international and local peer-reviewed journals, and has written technical reports and co-authored a book. She has also supervised many undergraduate and postgraduate students. Dr. Nkiru is particularly interested in clinical, nutritional and infectious disease epidemiology, biostatistics, public health nutrition, as well as reproductive and global health research.
Outside the office, Nkiru is an avid reader, enjoys travelling and is a devoted wife and mother of three.
