Dr. Emmanuel Chukwudalu Ohaekenyem is a distinguished researcher and educator specializing in Chemical Biology and Bioinorganic Chemistry. A First-Class Honours graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Emmanuel's academic and professional journey has been marked by innovation, leadership, and a commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, particularly in cancer research, molecular biology, and drug discovery.
His research focuses on designing, synthesising, and applying novel drug-active macrocyclic and Schiff-based compounds, with significant contributions to anticancer therapeutics. Through collaborations with leading scientists like Emeritus Prof Ikenna Onyido, Prof Sunday Atawodi and Prof. Namrita Lall at the University of Pretoria, Emmanuel has gained expertise in advanced techniques such as cytotoxicity assays, cell manipulation, and computational tools. His groundbreaking work has earned numerous accolades, including the Periodic Table of Younger Chemists Award at the IUPAC100 conference in Paris, France, the Best Poster Prize at the IUPAC Africa Postgraduate Summer School on Green Chemistry in Tanzania, and the AGNES Intra-Africa Research Mobility Grant for cancer research.
Emmanuel’s achievements also include the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Research Scholarship, the RSTMH Student Ambassador position, and the American Chemical Society Committee on Education Recognition Award for Leadership in Mentoring. He recently served as co-PI for the Sloan Research Grant and represented Nigeria as an IUPAC Young Observer during the 52nd IUPAC General Assembly in The Hague, Netherlands.
Beyond research, Emmanuel is deeply committed to education and outreach. As a Senior Lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, he has mentored undergraduate students, securing funding to participate in international conferences and foster their academic growth.
