Staff Profile

As an Educational Psychologist, I have research interest in optimizing the learning potentials of children with disabilities and those from underprivileged backgrounds. Currently, I work to ensure that they are productively engaged and included in regular classes. My research has focused on challenges students with special educational needs (SENs) and students from underprivileged environments face in school, factors impacting on teachers’ willingness to include SENs in regular classes; and intervention programmes to advance inclusive education in developing nations. I recognize that student development is a product of the interaction of both distal and proximal factors. Its explanation demands comprehensive theoretical explanation in which such variables are infused to show the pathways of student development. This has prompted me to anchor my research on bio-ecological theories. I have published more than 50 articles and book chapters, and have had the privilege to work as a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of the Free State, where I was involved in conducting a research aimed at creating an environment that accommodates diversity in higher education within the South African context. I have also served as a member, Advisory Board for the Transformation Strategy Group of Universities South Africa on the national study titled ‘Reshaping Universities to Create A Student-Centred Higher Education System in South Africa’. I also participated as an active member of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University team for the Tuning Africa II Project (January-October, 2017) - Course Design for Outcomes Based Learning in Higher Education, Tuning Online Course (3 ECTS Credits) - The Africa-EU Partnership.

1Nwogbo, V. N., Nwosu, K. C., Anierobi, E. I.. (2023, August) Students in rural areas in developing nations are at risk of under-performing and dropping out of school. This worsens when it comes to science subjects such as mathematics. Sustaining their mathematics interests demands understanding the factors that impact their mathematics learning outcomes. Our study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design to examine the association between teacher effectiveness and rural students’ mathematics interests. Our sample comprised 205 randomly sampled secondary school students from six community schools in Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria. Our findings revealed that all the components of teacher effectiveness were positively related to students’ mathematics interests. After controlling for gender, the regression analysis revealed that the dimensions of teacher effectiveness had a joint significant association with students’ mathematics interests, with the student-teacher dimension having the greatest predictive capacity on students’ mathematics interests. We concluded that affective aspects of teacher effectiveness are crucial for stimulating rural students’ interest in mathematics
