Prof. Okoye, Nkechi Helen is currently a professor in the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. She is an alma mater of Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Bakori, Katsina state where she had her first experience with Chemistry. After graduation from the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, she moved on to the University of Port Harcourt where she obtained a Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry.
Being a teaching staff of the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, it was logical that she satisfied her quest for more knowledge and sharpen her skills to train younger minds. Her Ph.D. thesis (Environmental Chemistry) ascertained the flammability characteristics and thermal degradation of fifty–three timbers in response to the dearth of such data on tropical woods in Nigeria. Her research interests are on water quality of rivers and boreholes, e-waste and waste water treatment, use of flower pigments as indicators for titrimetric analysis, eco-friendly flame-retardants for cellulosic materials and production of wood plastic composites as a solution to environmental concerns on plastic wastes.
Nkechi Okoye has served and continues to serve the University and the society in several capacities. She enjoys reading, writing, travelling, teamwork and equity. She advocates and believes in chemistry practice for sustainable development. She seeks to encourage women scientists to carve out their niche in this Periodic Table called Earth!
