Introducing *Professor Ejeatuluchukwu Obi*
The Co – Initiator of SIBRED – UNIZIK
Permanent Member of the SIBRED Advisory Board
Incumbent Deputy Provost, College of Health Science, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi Campus
Former Sub Dean, Students Affairs, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi Campus
Dr. Ejeatuluchukwu, also known as *Jatex* for short with *Obi* as surname, is a *Full Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology* at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), located in Nnewi Campus, one of the university's five campuses. Prof. Jatex Obi is an exceptionally knowledgeable researcher who has published in over 70 peer-reviewed journals and has reviewed numerous articles in national and international journals.
In terms of cognate work experience, between 1986 and 1989, Prof. Obi first worked as a *Medical Laboratory Scientist* at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Borno State, Northeastern Nigeria. Later, from 1989 to 2011, he joined the services of Nnamdi Azikiwe University , Nnewi Campus, Nnewi , Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria. At NAU, Nnewi Campus he advanced through the ranks to becoming the Deputy Director of Medical Laboratory Sciences in 2005. In 2011, he changed his status from non-teaching staff to becoming a university lecturer at NAU, Nnewi Campus. In 2020, he was promoted to the rank of a *full Professor (Pharmacology and Toxicology)*. Many undergraduates, postgraduates and younger staff of the university have benefited from his mentoring.
Likewise, Prof. Jatex Obi suddenly showed up in 2017 as a destiny helper to lighting up the career of John Agbo Ogbodo - the Founding Director of SIBRED. Precisely in June 2017, John attended a monthly meeting of the Center for Sustainable Development (CSD)'s Research Associates at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. That CSD Research Associates meeting was presided over by Emeritus Professor Ikenna Onyido, our incumbent SIBRED's Journal Editorial Advisory Chair. By the end of the meeting, Prof. Jatex Obi walked the meeting space, looking for John Ogbodo, a.k.a the Forester in their midst. Professor Obi and John finally met and greeted each other. Professor Obi immediately advised John to focus on bamboo research as part of his forestry profession, citing opportunities and knowledge he had gained from his two visits to China. Prof. Obi had participated in two workshops held by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology: one in 2011 on the development and utilization of non-timber forest products (NTFP) and the other in 2015 on the sustainable industrialization and commercialization of NTFP and the development of sustainable bamboo.
Consequent upon frequent phone communications, Prof. Obi became mutually attached to John Ogbodo - a specialist in remote sensing and forest surveying. As such, John eventually developed some interests in bamboo value chain research lines after Prof. Obi had persuaded him repeatedly to do so.
John subsequently submitted an application to join the INBAR's Taskforce on Sustainable Bamboo Management (TFSBM) in 2020 on the recommendation by Prof. Jatex Obi. By the end of 2020, John traveled to Ghana for the TFSBM's first in-person meeting during the COVID-19 pandemic. John was inspired to initiate SIBRED from that meeting in Ghana, while Prof. Obi supported his initiative to the fullest.
Now that everyone on this platform is taking the lead in advancing the coast of SIBRED, it is therefore , a testament that this SIBRED as an initiative is now firmly entrenched in history. As a professional forester who had previously worked with the federal government of Nigeria for ten years before joining the services of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka in 2017, I was motivated by Prof. Jatex Obi, a medical expert to see *bamboo research* as the best trending line of research for me, at a time when I couldn't see it myself.
Prof. Jatex Obi holds a Ph.D. Degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology, M.Sc. (Biochemical Pharmacology), Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Biochemical Pharmacology, PGD (Bioethics) and AIMLSCN (Haematology and Blood group Serology).
