Dr. Muoneme Izuchukwu Athanasius is a lecturer in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria. He specializes in painting, with particular interests in mixed media and installation art. Before joining academia, he served as a curatorial officer at the National Gallery of Art, Enugu Outstation, from 2012 to 2025, where he was actively involved in exhibition curation, art education, gallery tours, and the promotion of contemporary Nigerian art. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA), Enugu State Chapter. Dr. Muoneme graduated from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka with a Second Class Upper Division in Painting in 2007. Following the completion of his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the National Gallery of Art, Abuja, in 2009, he began his professional career as a Visual Arts teacher at Community Staff Schools, Asokoro, Abuja. In 2012, he joined the National Gallery of Art as a Curator II. In 2015, he earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Painting from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, under the supervision of Professor Okechukwu Nwafor. He recently completed his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Painting at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, under the supervision of Professor Chuu Krydz Ikwuemesi. An accomplished studio artist, Dr. Muoneme received the Best Mixed Media Painting Award at the 2016 edition of the Life in My City Art Festival (LIMCAF), Enugu. Throughout his career, he has organized and participated in numerous art exhibitions, coordinated art talks and educational programmes, mentored emerging artists, and served as a gallery tour guide. Since 2021, he has been a resource person at the annual LIMCAF Children's Art Workshop in Enugu, where he contributes to nurturing the artistic talents of children, including those with disabilities. Dr. Muoneme is a member of the Pan African Circle of Artists (PACA) and the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA). His research and studio practice explore the intersections of art and religion, art and politics, art and society, waste-to-art practices, mosaic, collage, mixed media, and installation art. He has published scholarly articles in reputable journals and contributed essays to exhibition catalogues, reflecting his commitment to both academic research and contemporary art practice.
